Art on the Move

SHARP’s Art on the Move remote learning program is doing far more than just helping students overcome the summer slide. So what is Art on the Move? This at-home STEAM-based mural project combines math, art and multicultural concepts, all while promoting social distancing. Student receive individual art kits to create their own piece and learn important math concepts in the process. Their art will join the works of other students to create a mural installed in their community.

SHARP has partnered with local community teaching artist Vedale Hill on this large-scale community endeavor. Vedale draws inspiration from his personal perspective of an impoverished urban upbringing, which has allowed him to apply his creative skills as a pragmatic practice of culture and identity. His work has been exhibited in museums, shows, exhibitions, and galleries across the country, including the Milwaukee Art Museum, Wisconsin 30/30 Americans Exhibition in conjunction with the American 30 exhibit, Art Miami and more.

His work has extended beyond the canvas as he has served as a practicing teaching artist and curriculum developer for Research For Action and the Wallace Foundation. One of his greatest accomplishments has been the creation of Jazale’s Art Studio, a non-profit arts education community youth studio, as well as an artist and residency program for artists of color in Milwaukee.

Vedale is responsible for the vision behind the mural, titled Our True Colors. By creating a character that is painted with their skin tone and favorite color, students will see the importance of embracing what makes them unique. They’ll also envision themselves in the greater context of their neighborhood and the city of Milwaukee as a diverse community. Set for installation in the Bronzeville/Harambee neighborhood, this mural will inspire children to think about who they are as opposed to what they are.
