The “summer slide” is nothing new in education, but COVID-19 is compounding the problem for urban students. That’s why SHARP developed curricula to conquer this six-month learning loss in the wake of school closures. Our Summer Learning Program strives to inspire lifelong learners and close the learning gap, no matter the obstacles.
Our programs:
- Serve urban elementary students in 3rd through 6th grade
- Take place in schools and Community Learning Centers
- Include in-person, virtual and blended-learning options
- Are now delivered to students at 18 partner sites
The Urban Agriculture curriculum guides students in examining the importance of urban agriculture through the lens of scientists and artists. It allows students to…
- Use hands-on collaborative activities, such as close looking and art technique exploration
- Explore aspects of urban agriculture including:
- Aquaponics and Vermicomposting
- Where our food comes from
- The conditions urban gardens need for growing food
- How urban agriculture can nourish neighborhoods
Urban Techies
Urban Techies is our NEW STEAM-based experiential curriculum. Here, SHARP helps students explore the purpose of urban agriculture and the fundamentals of coding. This hands-on experience is taking place both in-person and virtually. It allows students to:
- Create their own mini-garden boxes with LEGOS
- Track the growing process and growing conditions
- Learn about algorithms, sequencing and loops as they relate to farming
- Digitally design their own gardens
